php-openid sucks
Since I can’t find anything about how much this library sucks I thought I’d tell you. Jesus, I’m not sure if it’s the implementation in the example or the library itself, but having to spend 30 minutes to trace each error and come up with a solution is so time consuming. I can’t even begin to create the real thing with a broken example (It’s not your average...

Cleaner DISQUS comments
DISQUS is a cool comments service but it’s just to cluttered and it looks horrible on a dark page. Here’s some CSS to fix that. #dsq-content .dsq-dc-logo, #dsq-content .dsq-request-user-logout, .dsq-badge-small, .dsq-request-user-name small, .dsq-request-user-stats, #dsq-content .dsq-sharing-options,  #dsq-content .dsq-options, #dsq-content .dsq-login-buttons { display: none; }...

Yes the computer is still not fixed :(
I wrote this yesterday but I have it set to auto publish today. Anywho, my desktop still isn’t fixed and I’m still on my netbook. In brief we got the motherboard back, got thermal paste for the CPU, put it back together, and the we got the same problem we had 4 weeks ago. The next day we got a new power supply from BestBuy, a Corsair 650w. Same problem. So at this point it has to be the CPU....

CodeCanyon Competition
Right so CodeCanyon is having a competition next month, with over $6000 in prizes. The only guidelines are to submit the best stuff for the month of February. I have a few things planned for it, the only thing I can tell you specifics about is my templating class. Given the simplicity and power of it, it should sell pretty well. I gave a demo of it on Facepunch, so I’ll just link to it. I even...

Shenanigans
I say shenanigans because I’m not really blogging about anything in particular, I’m just giving an update to what’s been going on with me. Mail Clients Right so over at Facepunch in the Windows section Panda X was showing off screenshots of Windows Live Mail Wave 4. I’ll be honest, the clients I use right now are the web clients for gmail and the gmail app on my Droid. WLM looked like it had a...

Computer Update (Update)
It seems that my random guess about them sending a new motherboard was correct, this is what they’re saying now: Yet my name is still not John Duhard. Anywho, my tracking number is 363842310157694 and you can track it here: http://fedex.com/Tracking

nginx, php-cgi, and URL shorteners
For those of you who don’t follow my twitter, I’ve been in the process of moving both my servers over to using nginx instead of Apache. On vps2, the switch was pretty seamless (sans SVN issues). However, vps1 proved to more of a challenge. This was partially expected, as I run multiple sites on this VPS. “Engine X” I began my journey by following the guide over at the Arch Linux wiki and...

Computer Update
Update: for those of who are here looking for what WAITSWAP means, it would seem that it’s for when a your return is awaiting a replacement part or item. So I finally found the tracking number for my box, and according to UPS it had made it to California okay. Unfortunately that’s not what ASUS was saying. This was Sunday night and the box had arrived on Friday. Being hopeful that the box...

OpenPeer update
For those of you wondering what we’ve been doing, the honest truth is that not much has gotten done. For the last week I’ve been too busy to delegate out tasks to people, and doing it all from my netbook isn’t helping. However, I am happy to share that I finished writing the deployment system for the developers. The OpenPeer deployment system basically takes the pain out of...

Nexus One Widgets on Motorola Milestone/Droid
The new Nexus One by Google has a new widget for weather and news, and it’s very slick. This new widget should be available in Android 2.1, however, if you’re impatient or your phone won’t be getting an update any time soon (I’m looking at you G1 users), you can install the Widget yourself. wpbcubsfan on the xda-developers forum released the widgets in apk form, extracting it from the 2.1 ROM. If...

Desktop is broken
My desktop breaking has put a serious downer on my holiday. I mean, now that I have all this time I can’t do any real work with OpenPeer. It really sucks. Here’s the thread I made on Facepunch about it: Right now I’m on my netbook as my main computer won’t start up. This whole problem started a few months ago, my computer would hang out of nowhere, the only way to reboot was to...

Server Backup
Backing up my server has been something I’ve been meaning to do for awhile. I currently host websites and tools for over 5 different people and groups, losing all their data would not be a good thing. The complete data loss of Coding Horror and the Stack Overflow Blog were major wakeup calls for me. Luckily they have been able to restore most of their data through their community, something which...

openpeer
OpenPeer is an idea I had a few weeks ago when brainstorming for original web projects. It could be left at simply a tracker for open source projects, but why just leave it at that. The goal of openpeer is to create a strong community around people who love and use open source software, as well as those who have resources to spare for a charitable cause. The long term goal for openpeer is to...

Testing Windows Live Writer
Since garry seems to be going crazy over WLW, I thought I’d give it a try. This is the first time I’m using it as I’m typing, and so far it looks good. The preview pane is pretty cool, being able to see your post without having to save and reload is a timesaver for me. And he’s right, adding things like images is simple. I can even insert videos with ease. This is pretty cool software, I just...

PTC sites and VB.Net coding
For some time now me and my friend have been making referrals on accounts and using multiclicker2 for ad viewing. The process is pretty good, however making those accounts is a pain, mostly because we need to use proxies. Out of frustration we decided to write a program to help us out with this. Mike wrote a this application and gave me some code to work off of. [caption...

Linode, and why they are awesome
Since late June, I’ve been using a Linode 360 VPS to host my services, site, a rawr-irc leaf and the gmod engineers forum. Except for one instance recently and mistakes on my behalf, I have had no downtime with them. Setting up a VPS with them was instant, I was already accessing the server via SSH in under 10 minutes. Their control panel is completely custom, and very useful. [caption...

apt-get Super Cow Powers
What’s the deal with the “Super Cow Powers” on apt-get? Is there some joke I’m missing? For those of you not in the know, see this page from the easter egg archive. [caption id=”attachment_35” align=”aligncenter” width=”262” caption=”apt-get moo on terminal”][/caption]

PostWorks
PostWorks is a PHP framework I’m coding right now, that allows automated posting on popular forum software such as MyBB and vBulletin. The goal is to make automation for forum bots simple and effective. Here’s an example of  the code required to login into a forum and make a thread: [code lang="php"]

vBulletin 4
vBulletin 4 has been anticipated for almost a year now, and yesterday (10/13/09) vB 4 was made available for Pre-ordering. Pretty sweet. I wasn’t expecting this for another few months, even though they said they had alphas being tested. There’s no release date yet, so that’s a bummer, but all the people whining over the new license scheme. Look at this, A - OWNED/ACTIVE...
